A rose by any other name...

The LORD answered Moses, "I will do what you have asked, because I am pleased with you, and I know you by name." (Exodus 33:17)
From One Week

Richie and I decided to name our babygirl "Naomi." We both liked the idea of having a Biblical name for our child, whether it be a boy or a girl. There aren't as many options for female names, but this one stood out to me as having multiple qualities: it's historic yet modern, both classic and exotic, and it's not unusual, but it's still unique.
We also decided to go with the Filipino tradition of her middle name being my maiden name.

When I first mentioned the name Naomi to Richie, he immediately said, "Her nickname could be Mimi" :) I thought that made the name even cuter! Plus, it flows really well with our last name. So we've been calling her Naomi/Mimi while she was in my womb and told people that was her name as well.

At some point during the pregnancy, we played with the idea of having a back-up name, just in case she didn't look like a Naomi when she popped out. A popular Filipino trend is to combine the sounds/letters of the parents' names to come up with the child's name. Richie liked the name Kari Lee (pronounced like Carrie), but I wasn't sure how I felt about the baby also having Lee in her first name. At first I came up with the name Karina, but he already knew someone by that name on Guam. Our alternate name ended up being Karisa/Karissa... with the nickname Kari. Although we had it in mind, we rarely spoke it aloud.

Well, shortly after she was born, Richie and I took a good look at her and asked her what she would like her name to be. When we said Karisa, she actually made a frown on her face! Then, when we asked, "what about Naomi?" she let out a tiny grunt :) Soon after that, Richie followed her to the transitional nursery, where the nurses asked what her name is. Richie said that her eyes would respond to the nurses when they called her Naomi! She must have heard us all along :)

Her given name really does suit her. While we were at the hospital, many of the nurses and lab techs commented on what a
beautiful baby she is. I know that being her mother, I'm biased to believe that, but these random people have seen hundreds of babies, and I don't think they were just trying to be nice and make small-talk :) Her pediatrician even commented on Mimi's features as being "delicate and dainty." Also, Naomi's personality is truly pleasant. She hardly cries, unless she needs a diaper change or if she's hungry. At night, when she wakes up, she whimpers rather quietly instead of full-on crying. We love to hold and caress her, but she is also content laying in her crib, sitting up in her Boppy, or chillin' in her swing. Naomi is delightful in so many ways, that we even hadn't imagined! Just watching her sleeping brings us such joy, but especially when she smiles or gazes into our eyes, our hearts just melt!

Sweet Naomi: that she is!

Welcome Home

Then he goes home, calls his friends and neighbors together, and says to them, 'Rejoice with me, because I've found my lost sheep!' (Luke 15:6)

We took Naomi home on her due date: Tuesday, May 12th. Before packing our belongings and hopping in the car for the first ride back to Emeryville, Naomi had her first photo shoot. I've seen many hospital pictures of newborns with puffy eyes and blotchy skin, but Naomi already looks like a "big girl" in her pics... eyes wide open and posing, too! She is a true Daddy's Girl: Richie wanted to get the ultimate photo package right off the bat :) Take a look and feel free to sign her guestbook: Meet the Baby!

From Welcome Home

When we brought Naomi home, her first two visitors were Uncle Mike (Richie's Best Man) and Auntie Genina (Richie's 2nd cousin). Gena brought her a beautiful bouquet of sunflowers. It felt really nice to bring her home, where her stuff has basically taken over the entire studio! Our place feels complete with her presence and it's hard to imagine what life was like before her arrival.

Her first appointment with Dr. Tracy was wonderful! She was such a good girl... she hardly cried and even fell asleep on the examining table while the doctor was checking her out. Naomi wasn't jaundiced like we thought she might be, which was a major relief. Mimi weighed in at 5lbs, 12oz. Dr. Tracy even gave us the go-ahead to take Mimi out and about. We took her to our favorite place to eat while I was pregnant: Sun Hong Kong in Berkeley! (Side-note: We ordered the crispy pan-friend noodles, which was my major craving during the pregnancy and I hate to admit that it just didn't taste the same... still tasty, but not to-die-for-delicious!) Afterwards, we took her to Target and did a little shopping. So at 4-days old, Naomi already had her first true outing with us!

Happy Birthday

Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers. (3 John 1:2)

In God's perfect timing, she made her grand entrance in this world with a bang! Only born 2 days before her "due date," she waited until Mother's Day to give me the best present ever. Since I work in accounting I always have numbers on my mind... I think it's so cool that she was born on 05.10 at 10:50. 510 is also the area code where she lives... Naomi is a true East Bay girl :)

*Side note regarding numbers: Naomi is the third baby to be born to the Dimalanta family since the start of the new year. Craig and Cathy's babyboy Weslee was born on 02.04; Leia and Anthony's babygirl Arabella was born on 03.09; Naomi was born on 05.10. I might just be a nerd, but isn't that cool how the day is a derivitive of the month? So easy to remember! Thanks be to GOD!*

Lots of visitors at the hospital. Uncle Marc was the first to visit us, fresh off a flight from the East Coast; we hadn't even left the labor and delivery room yet. He brought us gorgeous Orchids, roses, yummy turkey wraps and spam sandwhiches :) The rest of the Arapeles Fam came by minus her cousins Andrea (3) and Meleia (5 mos.) since they were recovering from the sniffles. The Dimalanta Clan paid a visit and Naomi got to meet all her boy cousins: Dean (7), Joshua (4), Owen (2) and Weslee (3 mos.) They brought us beautiful tulips and fried chicken. Auntie Melissa was driving through the neighborhood and said hello. Grandma Tess and Grandpa Oscar wanted to see the new arrival as well. Our final visitor at Alta Bates was Auntie Elisa and she showered Naomi with lots of cute summertime clothes and accessories!

A Birth Story

To the woman He said, "I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you." (Genesis 3:16)

More details regarding my labor and delivery :)

When my water broke at 5:30AM on Saturday morning, I wasn't sure if that's what really happened since I still was waiting for my "bloody show." It was a small gush while I was laying in bed and was slightly pink when I checked my maxi-pad.

I tried to go back to sleep, but I couldn't stop thinking off all the things I wanted to clean "Berry"...my Mitsubishi Eclipse (named as in cars being called "Cherry" but Richie says it's cuz it's "berry berry f/past"! Hahaha! The biggest nesting thing that happened to me was the day before I was cleaning Richie's car since it was a mess (the Subaru that he named Dakine) ! I was polishing and vacuuming and practically detailing the dang thing!

Anyway, finally at 7AM, I decided to call the doctor. I told them, I think my water broke but I wasn't sure and they told me to come to triage. I also called my Mom to let her know because she's my doula :) Since I wasn't feeling contractions yet, Richie and I took our sweet time: had breakfast, took a shower, finished packing and headed off to the Alta Bates Medical Center, only 3 miles away. We got there at 9AM and they confirmed that my bag of water had indeed ruptured. They would have admitted me right then and there but there were no beds available, plus I wasn't having contractions (I guess only 15% of women have their water break before active labor begins). So at 10:30AM they told me to go for a walk and have a light meal then come back in an hour or two. By that time, my parents, Rally & Lily, and twin sisters, Eva & Angeline, were already arriving at the hospital. We decided to walk up the street to College Avenue and have brunch.

While we were at the restaurant, I started to feel the contractions, but they were neither strong nor consistent. When we got back to the hospital at 12:30PM, there still weren't any rooms available, but they said I had to be admitted within 12 hours of my water breaking to prevent infection. So they said, go home and come back at 5pm or sooner if my labor starts to get really strong and active.

We ended up renting a movie from Blockbuster and went back to our condo in Emeryville. Richie's parents, Edna & Titong, were driving back to the Bay from LA, after visiting his sister Leia, her husband Anthony and their new babygirl Arabella. They were hoping to make it back before I gave birth. Back at Watergate (our residential community) I lay in bed and tried to relax as my mom timed my contractions. Around 4PM, Richie and I decide to take a stroll around the boardwalk and enjoy the view of the Bay. Like clockwork, when 5pm rolled around, I was having minute long contractions, 4 or 5 minutes apart. By 6PM I was officially admitted and finally lay in a hospital bed :)

Our first nurse, Alani - a young hapa from Hawaii, was really sweet. I should mention that my mom Lily is also a Registered Nurse, so she quickly bonds with other RNs. Pleasant conversation was had and she asked me what my birthplan was. My philisophy was that I wanted to see how far I could go without medication; I would prefer that they weren't offered to me, but if I ask for it and it's not too late, then to go ahead. Since they really wanted me to deliver within 24 hours of my water breaking, they gave me pitocin to induce my labor and speed things along. I was a little weary because supposedly labors induced with pitocin tend to be stronger than those that progress naturally.

Richie's mom Edna joined us in the delivery room when his parents arrived around 7PM. The pain was increasing so around 9PM, I ended up asking for a "morphine" type of medicine (maybe Demerol?) that was supposed to "take the edge off" the pain but that I would still feel contractions. The meds were supposed to last an 1-1.5 hours and I could ask for more if I wanted to. With the contractions getting stronger and I was only 5 cm dilated, I was thinking "dang, if this is the pain now, I can only imagine what it will feel like later... cuz it sure felt "edgey" to me!!

So YES, I did end up asking for the epidural at 10 PM. I figured I don't want to wait until it's too late and it's already time to push! (This happened to my sister Jasmine with her daughter Meleia). My contractions started to slow down after I got the epidural, so they pumped up my pitocin. The doctor guesstimated that I would give birth by Noon the next day. That seemed like such a long time, but since I couldn't feel a thing, patience came easily.

At 11:30PM the nurse Alani left and she was relieved by two other nurses, Alaina and Sarah. Alani seemed kinda bummed that she wouldn't be there to deliver my baby but would check on us in the morning. The doctor gave me a new estimate of 4AM on Sunday morning when she saw that my labor had progressed faster than anticipated. Unfortunately, at one point things ended up speeding along too fast and the baby's heart rate dropped to the point where the obstectrician and another nurse were brought into the room and I was asked to change positions several times. They stopped the pitocin and the baby calmed down, but I still had a ways to go.

It seemed like forever, but at 9:30AM, Alaina asked me if I was ready to push since I was finally 10 cm dilated. Richie and my mom Lily were at my legs and my mother-in-law Edna was supporting my head. I was told that it wasn't uncommon for first time mothers to push for up to 3 hours! NO WAY! Even though the nurse was telling me I was doing well, it felt like the pushing seemed to be going nowhere.

The mood changed when the traveling nurse, Jackie, came to relieve Alaina, she mistakenly thought that my mom was the nurse! That was funny, but Jackie quickly got down to business and realized that the baby was OP, facing up :( At this time, Alani had come back and wanted to care for me again, but we decided that since Jackie already had a grasp on the situation, we'd keep her instead. Jackie, greased the baby's head with mineral oil and helped to stretch me out, but I hadn't been pushing correctly.

Once she told me where to apply the pressure, that's really when things got heated... literally. I was sweating and huffing and puffing! Richie was cheering, "She's right there! I can see her head!" (among other things: see previous post). Once her head had popped out, the doctor didn't pull her out immediately because the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck. Dr. Asan snipped the cord *sorry, Richie, maybe next time* and at 10:50AM on Mother's Day, I gave birth to a babygirl :) I don't remember this, but my mom told me later that when the baby finally came out, Richie yelled, "TOUCHDOWN!"

Mom Edna started crying right away, but I was kinda in shock. I was so wiped out, but I was also so scared for the baby because she looked pale and wasn't crying. In the corner I could see them lifting her arms, and the baby was too floppy. They said she was just as drained from the delivery as I was, if not more. My mom later told me that although her body was limp, her eyes were wide open and looking around, as if to say "Where am I?" I felt so helpless and wanted nothing more than for her to let out a large cry, but she only whimpered. I held her briefly before they wheeled her off to the transitional nursery. I prayed for God to give her the strength and revive her completely.

I was oddly at peace while she was away because I had the utmost faith that she was going to pull through. Sure enough, she had recuperated the time she got to the nursery. Richie said that when she was examined, the nurse asked, "Why are you bringing me a perfectly healthy baby?" Needless to say, our prayers were answered. She just needed a little time to get herself together... and who could blame her after 30 hours of labor and delivery! It sounds long, but like they say, after all is said and done, once the baby is born, all the pain was well worth it!

As for her stats, I was totally expecting to give birth to an 8-lb baby. I had gained almost 1.5 times the recommended weight and both Richie and I were heavier babies when we were born. So when I saw on the scale that she was only 6 lbs and 4 oz, I had to do a double take. Then on top of that, she's also a long baby: 20.5 inches! Her poor head had been bruised up since she was practically pulled out of me, but when they measured her head, it was also considered on the small size.

So after 30 hours from start to finish, baby and I finished the marathon with flying colors! Would I do it all over again? You betcha... in a heartbeat!

Naomi's Mother's Day Surprise!

Behold, children are a gift of the LORD, The fruit of the womb is his reward. (Psalm 127:3)

Dearest Loved Ones,

The wait is finally over... Richie and I welcomed our precious daughter Naomi Arapeles Dimalanta...on Mother's Day!

After a long labor and delivery of almost 30 hours, Naomi made her debut on Sunday, May 10th. My bag of water broke at 5:30am on Saturday morning. At the hospital, since there weren't any rooms available, I was told to allow the labor to progress and come back.. not once but TWICE! With strong contractions in force, I was finally admitted and given a bed at 6pm. My labor progressed slowly but surely. I was dilated enough to start pushing at 9:30am, but that was only the start of the longest, hardest hour and a half of my life! After pushing for an hour and not getting very far, the nursing staff switched and a more experienced nurse came to the rescue! She realized that the baby was "sunny side up" and proceeded to manually twist my baby's head around until she was facing the proper direction. Trust me when I say, this was NOT a pleasant feeling... for me or baby!

The last half hour is really when my support team pulled through for me =) Richie was the biggest cheer leader, like he was watching a sporting event, complete with video camera and yelling "BRING HER HOME!" The nurse Jackie, and my mom Lily (also a registered nurse) thought Richie was hilarious and were laughing and bonding while continually encouraging me to "PUSH LIKE IT'S THE BIGGEST BOWEL MOVEMENT OF YOUR LIFE!" (Of course they couldn't refer to it as "taking a dump" since they still had to remain "professional"!). Richie's mom Edna was silently praying and holding back her tears, while supporting my head and encouraging me as well. FINALLY at 10:50AM, Naomi was born!

What should have been immediate joy, quickly turned into worry because when they placed her on my belly, she was so limp and wasn't crying. They assured me that she was okay, but took her to a corner of the room to "wake her up." Apparently, she was just as wiped out from the delivery as I was. She only let out a few small cries and it was a whole 15 minutes before they let me hold her again before taking her to the nursery for further monitoring. God must have heard my prayers because by the time she was wheeled into the nursery, the nurse said she had revived herself! What a relief to know she was healthy and thriving!

Naomi decided to make this the most memorable Mother's Day ever. Our Heavenly Father has blessed Richie and I with such a beautiful baby! Not only is she a cutie-pie, but she already has the personality to match =) So far, she is making this whole parenting thing seem like a piece of cake *knock on wood* She has already brought us such joy and wonder and it keeps getting better and better =)

Thank you, everyone, for all of the love and support and prayers that you have showered on us. Naomi can't wait to meet you all!

Blessings and Best Regards,
KathyLee, Richie and Naomi
